You are not required to purchase a box kit. You may use your own boxes, but keep in mind shipping boxes are of greater strength than normal moving boxes.
You also do not have to ship all of the boxes in a kit. They can be saved and used at a later date.
Go to the 'Place an Order' tab on the left sidebar and select the 'Ship My Own Boxes' option.
